How to Make A-Line Skirt from Basic Skirt

Use knee-length basic skirt patterns for these procedures. Depending on the body measurements, basic skirt comes with single or double darts.

Basic Skirt Pattern with Double Darts
| Front Skirt |
Make a slash line from the dart point near side seam, parallel with center line.
Cut the slash line to the dart point. |

Close the dart.
Measure the space formed at the hemline (d). |

Extend the hemline at side seam half the amount of the space formed OR extend the hemline 1”-2”. |

Make a new side seam, blend at the hip. Square the corner of hemline and side seam. |

Close the space at the hemline and blend. |

Make a slash line from the dart point near side seam, parallel with center line.
Cut the slash line to the dart point. |

Close the dart so that the space formed at the hemline equal with the space formed at front skirt. |

Move the remaining dart to the other dart; distribute it evenly to the left and right. |

Extend the hemline at side seam with the amount equal to the front skirt extension. |
 |
Make a new side seam, blend at the hip. Square the corner of hemline and side seam. |
 |
Close the space at the hemline and blend. |

You can make A-Line skirt pattern of any length using this knee-length A-Line skirt pattern. Measure the amount you want to add/reduce, and lengthen/shorten the same amount along the hemline.
